Stretching from the lofty Himalayas to the tropical state of Tamil Nadu, India has a rich and colourful history and is home to a myriad of religions, cultures and traditions.
Palaces, Temples and Tombs
The Taj Mahal is on most travel bucket lists – the world’s most beautiful and enduring symbols of devotion. With four major religions, the country has its fair share of incredible temples and places of worship, from the intricate Khajuraho complex to Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple and the holy shrines of Varanasi.
Rajasthan
A land of mogul palaces, pink cities, blue cities and sprawling desert, this most westerly region of India is beguiling as it is beautiful. Picture perfect palaces and forts rise from the sand and lakes, with Mehrangarh in Jodhpur, the distinctive Hawa Mahal in Jaipur and the Golden City of Jaisalmer that dominates the landscape around it.
Kerala
One of India’s smaller states, it lies along the romantically named Malabar Coast. It is home to a series of waterways and canals – the Western Ghats – with beautiful beaches on one side, and mountains of coffee and spice plantations on the other. Look out for elephants, monkeys and tigers.
Tigers
This endangered species enjoys protection in a large number of reserves, sanctuaries and national parks, from Ranthambore to Bandhavgarh and Kanha, with the country having 75% of the world’s tiger population.
Food
Unlike anything you’ll eat here, authentic Indian food brings together complex flavours amongst a wide spectrum of dishes. The difference from region to region is marked, with spicy, sweet, vegetarian and meat dishes all different wherever you travel.
