Sicily

If you’re chasing sunshine, Sicily is hard to beat. July and August are the hottest months, perfect for beach days with occasional dips to cool off. The towns and villages come alive with festivals, so plan to visit early to explore the architectural treasures, then in the evening, enjoy a performance at the Syracuse Festival del Teatro Greco or at Taormina’s amphitheatre, set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Etna.

France

Oh la la! France never disappoints, and it’s so conveniently close. Southwest France is perfect for surfing, Provence tempts with mouthwatering cuisine and exquisite wine, the Île de Ré is ideal for cycling and bustling markets, while the Île d’Yeu promises outdoor adventures and classic, sun-drenched beaches.

Portugal

July in Portugal means endless sun-drenched beaches, particularly along the west coast – ideal for surfing or a morning cycle through the dunes. The Douro Valley offers slightly cooler climes, while the hills provide a peaceful rural escape. And, as across much of Europe, summer festivals are in full swing.

Start the day exploring temples or climbing volcanoes, spend the afternoon learning to surf, and in the evening enjoy a traditional Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet) performance. Alternatively, head east to sail around Komodo or explore the stunning Raja Ampat islands.
